In Buddhism, it has long been believed that when people die, they are judged by the world's 13 kings and Buddhas, including Enma, the master of hell.Kakuonji, as well as other Kamakura temples, perform this memorial service on the day of judgment in which family, relatives and friends gather to send good deeds and good reports they have accumulated in this world, helping the judgment of the deceased to proceed in a favorable direction. The positive power sent by people in this world will allow the deceased to be reincarnated into a better world.Kamakura is also home to 13 Buddhist pilgrimage courses.Walking a pilgrimage, from temple to temple, is considered one of these good deeds.
